Mother’s Day – A Celebration of Mother Earth by Lumari

MOTHER MATTERS
We are deeply, irrevocably connected to our planet. Our very breath celebrates the pure relatedness we have with Mother Earth. Every step we take resonates with the earth and speaks to her and of us. Every particle of our body is created from her body. We are spirit ensconced in matter. Even the word matter is derived from, is born from, the Latin word ‘mater,’ which means mother.

Our world is on Gaia. She is an infinite creator in an abundant universe. We are Her guests in this miraculous world. We are so fortunate to be able to pursue our inner being, to love, to share, to grow and contribute to our world from this wondrous abode. She gives to us and we create our lives upon Her. It is a rich and gracious relationship. Mother’s Day is a perfect time to celebrate Mother Earth and join her positive, creative energies. 

GIFTS FOR THE GODDESS
When we think of Mother’s Day, we think of gifts of appreciation for the women in our lives. This year we can give gifts of appreciation to our planet, as well. As healers, writers, teachers, artists, retailers and entrepreneurs aligned with conscious living, we have the opportunity to connect Mother’s Day with Gaia and share our creative gifts, unique perspective and appreciation in new ways. On this day and moving forward, we can bring Mother Earth gifts that benefit the planet and uplift us all.

What gifts shall we bring the Goddess? Each of us in our own environment, our own town and with our own talents can share some of the abundance and beauty we receive. For example, why not choose Mother’s Day as the launch point for a year long donation period. Your business can donate to a local or national non-profit organization or charity that does uplifting work for women and children in your area. After-school programs, children’s organizations, youth theatre and arts programs, women’s re-employment centers or shelters and other local programs can benefit from your contribution and your alignment with Gaia. In your generous donation, remember to commemorate Gaia. Writing the checks out to the organization with a card that says, “In gratitude for the abundance of Mother Earth, we make this donation,” will acknowledge your support for their work and our planet.

FLOWERS FOR MOTHER
Gaia brings us creation, beauty, abundance and sustenance. Flowers are a perfect representation of this bounty and are usually associated with Mother’s Day. The Goddess loves flowers, that is why she creates so many of them. Using this correlation, we can return these gifts to Mother Earth by giving her flowers. Instead of giving roses for Mother’s Day, wildflowers are a perfect gift that Mother Earth will truly appreciate. Planting wildflowers, helps restore natural harmony, generates a diversified ecosystem, feeds the birds, spreads beauty and revitalizes the lands of your area.

Seed packets of local, beneficial native wildflowers in your store displays or as gifts to your clients and customers are an inspiring way to merge beauty and ecology. Wildflowers will grow in places other kinds of plants find difficult or unaccommodating. Your local horticultural or garden society can provide you with the names of indigenous wildflowers in your area. They can also help you learn which wildflowers are endangered in your area. Sharing these wildflower seeds can help return their beauty to your neighborhood. Reclaiming parking strips, street islands and vacant lands for local and urban wildflower gardens feeds and nurtures the land, the body and the spirit. They are a wonderful gift that gives to our planet and to those around us. 

In our process of honoring Gaia with gifts for Mother’s Day, one way to more clearly know what Mother Earth would like is to ask Her. By moving into an intuitive state, you can feel your connection with Gaia and ask what you can do at this time, which will benefit and delight Her. Attentive listening to Gaia and what She wants, honors Her. The act of asking and listening can evolve into conversation and collaboration. It can assure that the gifts offered are indeed welcomed. In essence, we ask to be part of Her creative flow.

MOTHER EARTH CONNECTION MEDITATION
I have created a simple meditation to help us all connect with our planet, dear Gaia, and feel the rich, beauty she provides. You can do this meditation at any time and anywhere, for as long as you like.

Move into a comfortable position, with both feet touching the ground and close your eyes.

Invite your thoughts to gracefully recede from your focus.

Take six, very slow, very deep breaths to center yourself.

Breathe through your nose or your mouth and expand your lungs. Breathe deeply and fully to the bottom of your stomach.

Relax even more.

Next, inhale and exhale slowly, to the count of six.

Each time you inhale and each time you exhale, inwardly say “Thank you, Gaia. Thank you, Mother.”

With each breath, feel your connection to our planet. Feel the simple gratitude for breath and bread. This breathing forms a relationship with Mother Earth. She will feel your breathing and a reciprocal flow will ensue. With each breath, the cycle of connection and gratitude will help you share in the blessings and presence of spirit.

Continue breathing the “Mother Earth Connection Meditation” for as long as you prefer. You can incorporate this in other activities and still feel a powerful and expanded relatedness to our planet. It is powerful as a walking meditation and helps anchor spirit in the physical.

MOTHER'S DAY FOREVER
Through our own deepening connection to Gaia, we can discover new ways and new opportunities to delight and support our planet. We can share our lives and our spirit with Her beauty and wisdom. We can express our gratitude for the life, abundance and love that Gaia extends. Mother’s Day can expand from commemoration to consecration of our ongoing relationship with our Mother Earth.
